Lt. Col. Armour G. McDaniel Sr. was a prisoner of war for a month after leading the 332nd Fighter Group on a mission that would earn it a Distinguished Unit Citation.
McDaniel of Martinsville, Va., graduated from flight training on Jan. 14, 1943, at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. McDaniel and the 301st Fighter Squadron deployed to Italy in December.
On July 20, 1944, 20 enemy planes attacked the B-24 bombers being escorted by the 332nd Fighter Group, to which McDaniel's squadron was assigned, to Friedrichshafen, Germany. Capt. Joseph D. Elsberry, Capt. McDaniel, Capt. Edward L. Toppins and 1st Lt. Langdon E. Johnson responded: Each pilot shot down one enemy plane.
